Relative of Gandalf

Thank God the Crusades are over. The denizens of this blessed Renaissance Fair take religion too seriously to fight over it. Christianity and Paganism seem to coexist amicably. Early Renaissance had plenty of witch-hunts and religious wars, but that was elsewhen. Here, the few priests present are mostly preoccupied with discussing theology with cute little girls.

The real influence rests with one person. She is the one pious Mother Superior. Behind the sweet visage is a formidable intelligence.

Mother superior

Happy novice

She is a kindly soul, especially to children. In her pursuit of new recruits for the convent she not only explains the traditional benefits of taking the veil (salvation of the soul) but also the less obvious advantages (girls look good in black). Her domain has no lack of fresh, pious novices trying to shut out the world. Cecile Volanges was only the most notorious of them.

The harsh side of the convent life comes from the authoritarian command structure. To quote a former monk: "Celibacy was easy. Loss of free will was unacceptable". Other drawbacks include:
- Cold floor under bare feet during morning prayers.
- Restrictive rules ("Lights out at 10, candles out at 11")
- Compulsion to continue wearing black even when the leading fashion designers have come out with darling red lace designs.
